In a place, on our way

Coddiwompling through Africa

Coddiwomple (verb)
Ko-dee-wom-pl

"To travel in a purposeful manner towards a vague destination"

‘In a place, on our way’

Running a mobile tented camp in the Serengeti, we quickly learned the value of good communication.

One of the most common questions we had for our camp crew, safari guides, and supply drivers was

‘Where are you?’.

A very simple question – but its answer held incredible value to our mental well-being.

In an ideal world – we were hoping to get a description of a location as well as an indication that things were still going to plan i.e. there were no breakdowns, bureaucracy or other shidas (Swahili for problem) that needed dealing with.

Instead – the conversation often went as follows:

‘Where are you?’

‘I am in a place;

I am on my way’

???

Now that we have the idea to explore southern Africa without a plan or itinerary, we are going to adopt this new way of thinking and will spend the next couple of months in a place, on our way!
